Haley Heynderickx's debut album I Need to Start a Garden is a fresh and quiet perspective on the hardships of being human. For this design, I created two different visual systems for the album's front and back cover. The first one is designed with watercolor to create gentle and soft visuals to match the tone of the album. The second is made up of photo collages with text and color interacting in a way that speaks to the fragility of the music.

The music that Haley so carefully crafted for this album is hauntingly beautiful and makes you contemplate life, relationships, and emotions in ways that nothing else does. For the first visual system I wanted to hand draw Haley herself using watercolor. The color palette is soft and the line work speaks quietly.

The illustrations on the back cover are hints from the lyrics in her songs. They all represent something deeper and more complex than what they seem to be.

For the second visual system I wanted to bring out the earthiness and the natural tone that comes from the lyricism. The album is called I Need to Start a Garden. The random little pieces in the collage come together to create a pensive image. Nothing is glued down, so that shadows would interact with imagery and text.

The back cover is compromised of leafy watercolor stickers that create a frame around the bulleted setlist.
